Liberace, Super-Queen!

In honor of HBO's "Behind the Candelabra" I've put together a special Liberace photo spread. As easy as it may be to laugh at Liberace's over the top super-camp style and his freakish plastic surgery, remember that he was an unapologetic effeminate gay man in the entertainment industry 6 decades before Adam Lambert.

A very young and innocent looking Liberace.

Liberace had a huge female fan base throughout his career.

Subtlety was not in Liberace's vocabulary.

Liberace on Oprah; his last interview.

An article in the Daily Mirror in 1956, mentioned that Liberace was "…the summit of sex—the pinnacle of masculine, feminine, and neuter. Everything that he, she, and it can ever want… a deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavoured, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love", a not so subtly way to imply that Liberace was homosexual without actually using the word homosexual.
Liberace sent a telegram that read: "What you said hurt me very much. I cried all the way to the bank."

  1. One only has to take one look at Liberace to realize that without him, we may have never seen the likes of Freddie Mercury, the Jumpsuit 1970z Elvis (uze your imagination for the many otherz) in the form & mode we did. Lee paved the entertainment highway for many starz after him that just might've not known the welcome they did without him. The HBO flick is fabulous, don't deprive yourself of it's. viewing!

  2. Everyone in Hollywood used to say "if you want to know who's gay, check who's around Judy Garland."
